It may be a little while before I get this done, but I'll keep the thread updated. So, I just need to find time to make the attempt.keeping my fingers crossed that it'll solve my problem. However, since I have the original valve body & TCM I should be able to swap the units out. The response pretty much says the frontier & xterra TCMs are NOT interchangeable. I contacted a company that re-manufactures valve bodies and explained the situation. The tech said he is seeing no readings from the sensors on the transmission and it is stuck in high gear limp mode. Either the tech was right and the Frontier transmission is wholly incompatible with the xterra ECU or the TCM is dead. So I got the call from the trans doesn't work. Hoping it gets done in the next week or so now that we're past the holidays. I think the tech is dragging his feet a little he hemmed and hawed quite a bit when I dropped it off because "the computer" says it won't work (I thought for sure he was going to refuse the attempt). I haven't forgotten this thread! The xterra has been at the transmission shop for 3 weeks now with a donor transmission out of an 09 Frontier Off-Road that had 19k miles on it when wrecked. That's good to hear, makes things much easier! They are all RE5R05A to my knowledge, so I'm confused as to why another newer xterra or frontier unit wouldn't work.Ĭan anyone shed some light on this? Do I really need to find a good 2005 transmission specifically? All the interchange info on ebay for instance, says that only "2005 units will work in a 2005", other random posts here and elsewhere allude to TCM differences even on 2nd gen xterras as the years went by. I'm searching used transmissions and came across a newer unit out of a 2011 Frontier for a very attractive price.my quandry is that I have been unable to determine if these transmissions are compatible on a year by year basis. Fluids have already been flushed, no evidence of the more common milkshake problem. You put it in reverse and when ice cold it will creep backward on a flat surface unless you give it gas, and when warmed up it doesn't even do that much. It drives great in all forward gears, but slips like crazy in reverse (when it even moves at all). Unfortunately it refuses to lock into reverse, from my research here on the forum it sounds like the snap-ring problem several others have had. I've just acquired a 2005 xterra off-road in a trade. Sorry in advance if this is answered elsewhere, I couldn't locate it.
